History of Canon Non-Mydriatic Cameras -
In 1976, Canon's optical technology capability led to the development of the World's First Non-Mydriatic Retinal camera for mass screening of adult diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration. Today, Canon offers it's new generation of retinal cameras - the Canon CR-1 MII Non-Mydriatic and the Canon CF-1 Mydriatic Digital Retinal Camera system using Canon's EOS style Digital cameras.
The results are in! Doctors continue to comment that the Canon system provides the most realistic color and detailed image available on the Non-Mydriatic market when compared to other Non-Mydriatic cameras. Unlike other NM cameras, ultra fine detail like Nerve Fiber layer and NFL endings (bright points), early Drusen deposits and tiny Diabetic microaneurysms can be located on the retinal images using the new Canon ultra-high resolution imaging systems.

Canon EOS-50D Superior Image quality (spatial resolution across the entire CMOS sensor is 15.1 Megapixels - 4752 x 3168 pixels with 14-bit A/D Conversion)

 CMOS vs. CCD (competitors)

Canon’s award winning CMOS technology is one of the company’s key competitive advantages. With noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site, Canon’s CMOS sensors have lower noise and lower power consumption characteristics than CCD sensors.

CCD sensors use a bucket relay system to transfer each pixel’s accumulated electrical charge to a corresponding gutter. The operation is time consuming and draws considerable power, which limits battery life and generates unwanted heat, further increasing noise and lowering image quality. By contrast, signal conversion in Canon’s CMOS sensors is handled by the individual amplifiers at each pixel site. Unnecessary charge transfer operations are avoided, vastly speeding up the process of getting signal to the image processor. Noise generation is reduced and power consumption limited.

The combination of Canon Optics and Camera technology provide the clinical practitioner with true color reproduction pixel by pixel with extreme accuracyto help better differentiate pathology from background retina pallor.

Canon Advanced Digital Imaging, Quick access to images and Upgradable Digital Camera Body - Non-Mydriatic 45-degree imaging uses invisible infrared light to illuminate the retina during alignment and focus. As such, the patient does"not" experience blinding white light during this process. Images are captured using a mild white zenon flash. The images are captured by the camera and are transferred immediately via USB cable to a connected PC for observation. Using the software, you’ll be able to check ocular conditions right away, or take another shot when necessary (for example if the examinee blinked). The Canon Retinal camera produces images that are ideal for diverse applications including Screening programs and Telemedicine. Certain Canon digital camera backs can be easily attached/detached with or without an adapter depending upon model.

Canon Small Pupil Switch - enhances photographer's ability to image pupils less than 4mm on the Non-Myd camera.

Imaging Software  - From easy alignment to digital capture, the Canon Retinal camera imaging system has all the features needed to boost eye exam efficiency. Images can be checked just moments after capture. Image quality is outstanding! Depending on software version, the software can offer an easy-to-use windows format with drop-down menus allowing access to many functions including side-by-side and multi-image comparison, zooming, 2X mouse magnifier, red/green/blue color image display, red free, contrast, invert, side-by-side zoomable color stereo view, 5 channel stereo view, two-tone stereo, montage/mosaic view, user drawn cup/disc ratio, addition, subtraction, annotation, notation, e-mail, export, printing, archiving and networkable platform.

DICOM Software for VAMC and University Accounts - Software is available from Canon Medical Systems to comply with current "Visible Light" Standard and also new "OP" Standard for Ophthalmology according to the latest DICOM Standards.

See How Efficient You Truly Can Be with Canon  -  Images captured with the Canon Rerinal camera system can be viewed immediately, making procedures more efficient. But that’s just the beginning! Because the images are digital, they can be used with many different applications, such as telemedicine and electronic filing. The Canon Retinal imaging solution combines the power of digital imaging with quality and ease of use. It’s the latest advancement from Canon, the pioneer of non-mydriatic retinal cameras!

Canon User-Friendly Operation, Motorized Chinrest, Easy Alignment & Focusing  -
Preparing for image capture is remarkably simple, thanks to a two-step procedure. First, you align the split pupil image with the operation lever. Then you switch to the retinal display to adjust the split lines and working distance dots. This system makes it easy to obtain the correct distance to the retina, ensuring sharp images with practically every shot! Shifting the joystick to perform sequential imaging for stereo photography is attainable. External eye photos can be acquired by simply pulling out the + lens compensator and placing the patient's chin at the edge of the chinrest.

Fixation target & Reduced illumination - Eye fixation is simplified by a user-friendly moveable fixation target. The target is controlled with a button on the operation panel for the Canon CR-1 or external wand on the CF-1.This function allows you to induce movement with one hand while adjusting focus with the other. The Canon Retinal camera needs only a small amount of light to capture clear images, so examinees won’t be discomforted by brightness. Required illumination is 90% less than instant photography and generally 75% less than with film photography.

Testimonials = Superior design and quality

"To diagnose, you first have to use a camera system that can "detect" subtle pathology. To enhance detection, the Canon system now offers the EOS-10.1MP or higher SLR camera connected to the Canon Retinal camera optics.

"For patients that are young and have no retinal pathology, the camera can image the concave surface that surrounds the foveola known as the "umbo", the central pit of the fovea. It is the internal limiting membrane that appears as a "very" small halo right at the center of the fovea." This is "not" artifact!
